Grrr!
Some crack-dealing mofo broke in to our car today and stole the stereo! “Fortunately” he didn’t break a window (guess it would have been too noisy), although that might have been cheaper than replacing the locks he fiddled, for which the estimated cost of repair is around 500GBP! PLUS the cost to replace the stereo! Which he’s probably not going to sell for more than 100GBP! !@)#%*^ What a wanker.
Police are coming over to check out the car tomorrow and look for “blood, saliva, and other possible sources for DNA”. But I don’t really see the point… unless they happen to have his DNA on file already? And does that mean that Hanne and I would also have to submit DNA samples, so they can “rule us out”? I don’t want that information entered in to some mysterious database somewhere for the cost of a measly car door lock and stereo, thank you very much.
The most frustrating part of all this is the lack of control I feel I have in the matter. That, and the fact that in the stereo was a brand new copy of Ferry Corsten’s new album L.E.F., which had arrived only a week ago. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Lesson learned this week: ALWAYS remove your stereo faceplace, no matter how pointless you think it may be (although that still may not have prevented it being nicked… but I guess it would have helped).
Update: ok, pardon my Orwellian-paranoia there. The police didn’t have to take our finger prints… they just dusted the car and lifted whatever prints they could find, so that in the event that the fool is arrested in the future he can be linked back to this crime too… unless the prints were just mine and Hanne’s, in which case they’re worthless. Doh. oh well.

Well atleast the police are trying to do something! My stereo has been stolen twice, (not to mention a third time I actually witnessed them breaking into my car!) In my experience, the cops seem to think that this is such a minor offense, they try to keep back from laughing, seriously, they know they will never find it(stereo) or the people. THe worst part about it is not the stereo, but like you said, they either break your window, and glass is shattered everywhere and sometimes they way they break it also messes up the actual window mechanism (which is what happened to me) I think I “prefer” they break my door lock, cuz its not as expensive to replace. I cant believe it costs that much over there! That is way way way overpriced. Anyway, I completely feel your pain and I think these people that do that are the lowest scum of the earth!!

Nah, they’re not doing anything anymore. All they did was take prints in case they arrest the owner of the prints in the future so they can link him to this crime, but the prints were probably either mine or Hanne’s anyway. I was actually a little over on my price estimate, as it turns out. It should “only” cost around £140 to repair the door damage, plus however much I want to spend on the next stereo (not much! ;-)).
How much did your car take to repair each time?

Too much! I never actually calculated the costs of everything but prob around 1000(prob more) all together. The last time they stole everything, they not only took my stereo receiver but also my subwoofer and the amp..:( Needless to say, I will prob never get any of those things again! Plus with my new Honda they way it is set up, its almost impossible to install a non-factory stereo. It really sucks because the sound system in my car is crap! Hey, let us know if you want us to buy a reciever here. Not sure if they are compatible with UK cars? Dunno Oh well

Wow, not cool at all…
When I used to have a headunit in my car I ALWAYS removed the faceplate. I’m paranoid about those things. Even nowadays if my iPod is hooked up I will put it away no matter where I am. A car without tinted windows or an alarm and the faceplate on the stereo will grab some crack-dealing mofo’s attention quick.
Sorry to hear about the break-in. Especially since you had your L.E.F. cd taken (such a great album too!). Stereos have dropped considerably in price around here, and you can get one that will integrate nicely with your iPod for about $130 or so if I remember correctly…
